English Debate Competition by Students from the English Club
Students from the English Club hosted a Debate Competition, which was organised by the Student Support Committee of the English Language Centre, on Wednesday 14th December 2021. The competition, which was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall in the Engineering Building, aimed to enhance students’ public speaking skills and allow them to express their opinions, whilst encouraging them to become articulate users of English. The two opposing teams consisted of 4 students in each team from foundation Level 4. The teams went head on to debate about the topic of online learning, versus face to face learning. Judging the quality of the performance and arguments put forward by the teams, were panel members Mr Salim Al Badi, Mr Given Chakalisa and Ms Safiya Al Ajmi. A separate online poll was conducted for the audience to cast their votes too. The interactive event was attended by students and teachers from UTAS Shinas. Ms Safiya Al Makhmari and Ms Amira Al Balushi, members of SSC commented that the event was a great opportunity to push students to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Debates are a great tool to develop students' analytical and research skills. The winning team were awarded gifts and certificates for participation.
