ELC spearheads pre-opening seminar, workshops
The English Language Center (ELC) spearheaded a pre-opening seminar and three workshops held at A-230, ShCT Main Building, on September 6-7,2017.
Mr. Nasser Al Hindasi, HOS-CLP, conducted the first workshop dubbed “Teacher’s Talk.”
Considering Steve Walsh’s Framework on the self-evaluation of teacher talk, Mr. Nasser encouraged the EFL lecturers to reflect on the amount of their teacher talk.
The HOS also shared some valuable tips on giving instructions and providing feedback to students, which would limit teacher-talk in the EFL classrooms.
ELC lecturer Mr. Peter Copperwheat gave a seminar titled “Analysing Language for English Language Teaching.”
Mr. Peter stressed the importance of teaching both the grammar and lexicon of the target language.
On the second day, Mr. Joel Palad from ShCT’s Educational Technology Center delivered a workshop on MS Excel.
Mr. Joel shared practical tips on using MS Excel as he demonstrated efficient ways to organize files and calculate grades automatically.
Meanwhile, ELC lecturer Ms. Sumita Bandyopadhyay and Academic Support Committee Coordinator Mr. Karim Hanefiqui discussed the new Colleges of Technology (COT) Placement Test, which shall be implemented this first semester of Academic Year 2017-2018.
Ms. Sumita and Mr. Karim explained the parts of the test as well as the tasks of the invigilators during the conduct of the computer-based placement test.
