ELC faculty present paper, workshops in 18th Oman Int’l ELT Conference

Four English Language Center (ELC) faculty presented during the Oman 18th International English Language Teaching Conference held at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, 26th-27th April 2018.

Attended by educators all over Oman and nearby GCC countries, the Conference was themed “ELT—Current Perspectives, Trends and Challenges.”

ELC HoS-Curriculum and Teaching Methods (CTM) Mr. Nasser Al-Hindasi and lecturer Dr. Joseph Dayag presented a paper titled “Feedback in Omani EFL Context: From Research to Classroom Implications.”

The presenters posited that ELC lecturers must tactfully provide written corrective feedback on students’ essays.

“We have to apply the appropriate WCF strategies considering our students’ proficiency level, time and their attitude towards WCF,” the presenters added.

Ms. Maryam Alaufi delivered a workshop titled “Shift to a Paperless Classroom through an Innovative Web-based Platform.

Ms. Maryam’s workshop offered useful ways to help teachers use the web-based platform (Typeform) either inside or outside classrooms to get rid of paper materials. It also identifies goals of using the online platforms, ways to plan and facilitate effective assessment, and strategies for a successful interactive class.

Further, it showed different forms for designing, leading, and assessing tasks that help engage students in the learning process. Tested creative project options were covered in the workshop showing the flexibility of using online forms and how they can be incorporated into traditional curriculums.

Ms. Samar Ahmed Mesbah Mouneimne gave a presentation on “Challenges Generating a Change.”

The presentation highlighted and tackled the challenges teachers and students face in classrooms. Many new ideas were adapted to escalate the teaching-learning process. However, teachers and students still face serious problems that are relevant to curriculums, approaches, methods and techniques.

Ms. Samar emphasized in her presentation that a new vision should be considered to meet the learners' needs and expectations for a substantial change.
