EC organizes debate competition for students
The English Club (EC) of the English Language Center (ELC) conducted ‘Debate Competition: Can We Change Your Mind?’ at F-137, ELC Building, on 13th February 2018.
For the Foundation Program, two teams with four members from Level 4 comprising of best speakers nominated by their teachers, Future Leaders (female group) and Five Kings (male group), competed with each other. While in Post- Foundation, two teams with three members voluntary joined and formed Inspiration (female group) and Sparkle (two females and one male).
Future leaders won the first debate supporting the statement “Reading is worth more than listening or watching videos.” On the other hand, Sparkle team won the second debate that backed-up the idea that experience is more important than qualifications.
Said event was organized to increase students’ confidence, knowledge, and self-esteem; provide an engaging and active learner-centered activity; improve students’ extensive reading, research and note-taking skill and critical thinking skills; enhance students’ ability to structure and organize thoughts; develop students’ ability to provide well-organized arguments and show clear evidence and statistics; and encourage teamwork.
The competition is a part of the ‘Reading Week’ activities organized at the college by Sawead Al-Khair, English Club and Culture and Literature Group.
