MOM sponsors 10-hour ELT Training Course at SHCT
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of Sultanate of Oman sponsored a 10-hour English Language Teaching(ELT) training course at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Shinas College of Technology (ShCT) on November 17-18, 2016.
Seasoned teacher-trainer Ms. Karima Scroxton, director of Teacher Training and Development at Polyglot Institute, conducted the professional development (PD) activity.
During the course, the teacher-trainer demonstrated the different student-centered approaches and strategies in teaching lexis, grammar and the four macro skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing).
“Encourage as much collaborative work (pairs and groups) as possible as this replicates real-life use of the language,” Ms. Karima advised the participants.
“Make the language experience of your students meaningful,” underscored the trainer who has been teaching ELT and training educators for more than 27 years.
Moreover, Ms. Karima shed light on the important considerations for the selection of course materials and the integration of technology into the EFL classroom.
All the lecturers from ShCT’s English Language Center participated in the certified ELT Training Course, aimed at enhancing their pedagogical skills and fostering student-centered approaches and strategies.
ELC Head of Center Mr. Ali Abdullah Al Balushi welcomed the participants and expressed gratitude to all the people who made the two-day PD activity possible—former ShCT Dean Dr. Ali Al Mughairi, new ShCT Dean Dr. Khalid Zayed Al Muharrami, ELC HOS for English Language Programs (ELP) Mr. Ahmed Al Saadi, ELC HOS for Curriculum and Teaching Methods(CTM) Mr. Nasser Al Hindasi, ELC Staff Support Committee (SSC) Head Mr. Saif Al Washahi, and the Staff Professional Development Team members.
“We must also thank Mr. Johnny Kwashie for writing the proposal submitted to the Ministry during his stint as SSC head last academic year,” Mr. Ali expressed in his opening remarks.
Mr. Ahmed Al Saadi, ELC HOS-ELP, introduced the trainer.
In his closing remarks, ELC HOS-CTM Mr. Nasser Al Hindasi stressed that the teacher-trainer succeeded in unlocking the lecturers’ creativity.
Meanwhile, the ELC faculty commemorated Oman’s 46th National Day during the second day of the training as they paid respect to the Omani flag while the national anthem was being played.
During the short closing program, Ms. Karima and the ELC faculty partook of a cake with the design of the national flag of Oman.
