On the Job Training

The Ministry of Manpower has started a new program, in consultation and collaboration with, all sectors of Trade and Industry for young Omani Nationals which provides opportunities for their professional training to meet the needs of the various sectors of Business and Industry. The private and public sectors are our main customers; hence it is of paramount importance that they should be involved in modifying the programs to suit their needs.

On- the-Job Training Department's Aim

The main purpose of training period during the study is to show our students the real processes at industrial area. In addition it is used to give our new students a clear idea to help them in understanding the relation between knowledge and skill in practical area and to maintain the partnership between them.

On- the-Job Training Objectives

The main objective of 'on-the-job training' is to acquaint the students formally to a real life work place environment. This will help to explore the relationship between the knowledge & skills acquired in college with those required in the working situations. This enables students to understand and respond better to the market demand.

The students on OJT will be like an employee under training, therefore he will follow all the rules and regulations of the company/concern.

There may be:

1. Compulsory attendance – 8 weeks (except on health grounds)
2. Safety rules and regulations.
3. Dress code.
4. Allotted timings.

5. 5 or 6 days of training per week.

During OJT the student has to work for 8 hours per day as an employee under training and must also cover all the goals, objectives and outcomes at the required level as per the training schedule. The staff member/s and an assigned supervisor of the company/concern will be jointly involved in the continuous evaluation, assessment and grading of the student. There will be assessment forms based on standardized assessment system for all the departments of the Colleges of Technology. On-the-Job Training (OJT) is offered at three different levels of 8 weeks full time course of 3 credit hours for each level.

Level Year of Training Duration
Level 1 Diploma Second 8 weeks
Level 2 Higher Diploma Third 8 weeks
Level 3 Bachelor Degree Fourth 8 weeks

The industries/concerns will not be committed with the college or Government to recruit any of the trainees unless they feel satisfied to do so. If the trainee is provided with a nominal stipend to cover transportation & accommodation expenditures, it would be highly appreciated. The OJT system has three main participants, the Student, an Industrial Supervisor from the participating organization and the College Assessor from the concerned teaching Department of the College.

General Aims of OJT

1. Demonstrate the broad role and importance of the technician in industry / commerce.
2. Give the student an opportunity to establish an interest in industrial/ commercial activities.
3. Provide a general work experience, so that the student can apply skills previously acquired at the College and acquire new relevant skills.
4. Provide a foundation for prepare the student for working efficiently and productively in industrial commercial establishments.
5. Create a two-way link between the Trade & Industry and the colleges of Ministry of Manpower so that the graduate of the colleges fulfill their needs and requirements.

This training is to enhance the knowledge and skills developed during the course of the new program. This will not only enhance the skills already acquired and also new skills that will make them viable as per the labor market demand. The training is designed for the students who are unable to achieve the required CGPA grades to proceed to higher level courses as well as for those completing the degree program.
